Spectune is a music app where you paint sound on a pitch-and-time canvas and hear the painting played back.

Email [email protected] and I’ll get back to you. It helps to say which device you’re on and which version of the app.

Frequently asked

How does painting turn into sound?
Height on the canvas is pitch and left to right is time, so a horizontal stroke is a held note and a diagonal one is a glide. Brighter paint plays louder. Each track then plays its paint with its own instrument or voice.
How do I undo?
Tap the canvas with two fingers, or use the undo and redo buttons at the top. One undo history covers both strokes and changes to the arrangement.
What’s the difference between a section and a song?
A section is a loop of four, eight or sixteen bars that you paint on its own. The song is those sections arranged in order, up to 128 bars. Placing a section twice makes a linked copy, so painting one changes both; choose Make Unique to split a copy off.
How do I paint from a recording?
Choose Import a Sound, then pick an audio file, or record with the microphone. On iPad you can also drag a file from Files or Voice Memos straight onto the canvas. Spectune finds the loudest pitches at each moment and paints them onto the selected track, starting at the playhead.
Can I paint only with Apple Pencil?
Yes. Turn on Only Draw with Apple Pencil in the iPad’s Settings › Apple Pencil. A finger then scrolls the canvas and the Pencil paints, with pressure setting how loud each stroke plays.
How do I export a song?
Tap the share button. You can export the song as M4A or WAV, a separate stem for each track, a video of the painting as it plays, or the project file to open in Spectune on another device.
Where are my songs saved?
In the Files app, under On My iPhone (or iPad) › Spectune. Every change is saved as you go.
Does it sync between my devices?
If you want it to. Turn on iCloud Sync in Spectune’s settings and your songs move to iCloud Drive › Spectune, and appear on every device signed in to the same Apple Account. It needs iCloud Drive turned on in iOS Settings.
Does it work offline?
Always. Spectune never needs a connection.
Is there a subscription?
No. Spectune is $4.99 once, with every feature included and nothing to buy inside the app.
